Voting for the top 10 Bulgarian engineering achievements

In connection with the initiative of the Federation of Scientific and Technical Unions to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the beginning of higher technical education in Bulgaria (on July 7, 2016), the newspaper of TU - Sofia, "Technical Vanguard", conducts a survey to determine the Top 10 Bulgarian engineering achievements during this period. We present to you the proposals of TU - Sofia for ranking among the top ten achievements. In addition to these, proposals from other VET institutions and from you will be added. We urge you to vote on our website http://nta.tu-sofia.bg and together determine the best Bulgarian contributions to national and world science. The national ranking will be announced during the celebration. 

A casting method with counter-pressure by Acad. Angel Balevski and Eng. Ivan Dimov - one of the most significant engineering achievements of humanity in the second half of the 20th century. Approved in 1961, the method practically represents a new scientific direction in the field of metal science and metal technology and is unique in obtaining materials with an optimal structure, without defects in the metal. 

Industrial application of nitriding in a glow discharge (ion nitriding) - a process for surface treatment of metal parts, aimed at increasing the wear and fatigue resistance of the material. Pioneers in the development, study, and industrial application of this qualitatively new method are Corresponding Member Prof. Dr. Dimitar Buchkov and his team. Their more than 150 scientific developments, publications, and patents, as well as the industrial implementation of ion nitriding installations in leading machine-building enterprises in Bulgaria and abroad, are also an exceptional contribution. 

The first television broadcast of images from a distance in Bulgaria, implemented in 1952 at the Department of High-Frequency Engineering in the building of the Levski Monument, under the supervision of Prof. Sazdo Ivanov and a team of highly motivated teachers, researchers, and students. On the eve of May 1, 1954, the first official over-the-air television broadcast was carried out. 

The first satellite television receiver with a parabolic antenna in Bulgaria, constructed at MEI. 

Device for controlling an implantable artificial heart (1976) by the team of Corresponding Member Prof. Nikolai Naplatanov – a national achievement, created in the laboratories of VMEI 

Research Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and the International School "Expert Systems and Artificial Intelligence" by Prof. Lyudmil Dakovski and like-minded colleagues – the first in Bulgaria (1983). 

Unique Psycho-Physical Complex (1987) for monitoring the condition of cosmonauts during flight, by order of the Institute of Space Research. It was created for the flight of Georgi Ivanov and was used until the end of the international station "Mir". 

Unique systems and specialized equipment for measuring and controlling geometric parameters of parts and systems, applied in the construction of new linear accelerators in Germany and France by a team from the Scientific-Application Laboratory "Coordinate Measurements in Mechanical Engineering" .
