About the Laboratory

The Center for Research on Microclimate, Energy and Environment, CERDESEN, was established in 1995 at the Technical University of Sofia within the framework of the international Tempus project S_JEP09862-95. For nearly 25 years, CERDESEN has been working on international projects, projects funded by the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as on national industrial projects. In 2002, CERDESEN was recognized as a "Center of Excellence" by the European Commission and received funding for three years (ENK6-CT-2002-80661, 2002-2005).

Goal

The scientific research activities of the center are focused on the theoretical and experimental study of heat and mass transfer processes, whose efficiency is determined by the aerodynamic interaction on which they are based. Theoretical studies are conducted based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which allows for a detailed study of the local parameters determining the specific process.

A number of projects implemented in SERDESEN are related to the simulation study of combustion processes in various industrial boilers that burn coal or natural gas.

Another group of projects is related to the study of aerodynamic interaction in ventilated rooms and the determination of microclimate parameters within them.

Simulation studies are conducted using licensed software packages. The SERDESEN center also has modern measuring equipment for assessing the parameters of the indoor environment (microclimate) and its impact on humans.

A specific activity of the center over the years has been the organization and conduct of specialized events for students and young scientists, as well as the conduct of specialized professional and scientific seminars, workshops, summer schools, and training courses.

The objects of research at SERDESEN also include various tasks from hydro- and aerodynamics in engineering applications.

Assessment of the thermal-physiological comfort, health, and work performance of people in enclosed spaces with different purposes (office buildings, educational institutions, homes);
Renewable energy and more specifically wood biomass;

Organizing educational events such as summer schools, workshops, seminars, courses, etc. The CLIMACADEMY project is an excellent example of SERDESEN's competence in this area;
