Hydraulic and pneumatic technology is used practically in all spheres of human activity: the oil extraction and oil refining industry, energy, mining industry, food industry, water supply systems, transport, agriculture, etc. It is also applied in a number of specific areas such as medical equipment, water purification, technical facilities in the show business, household appliances, etc.The use of energy from renewable energy sources (RES) – the energy of water in reservoirs, rivers and seas, as well as wind energy – is unthinkable without hydraulic and pneumatic technology. This necessitates the study of blade hydraulic and pneumatic machines (turbomachines), hydropower plants and hydroelectric facilities.Hydro- and pneumatic drive systems are the basis of the driving power technological equipment. They are used in transport vehicles, in construction machinery, lifting and transport equipment, for driving manipulators and robots, for mechanization and automation of many production processes, in agricultural machinery and many others.The development of the industry and the specific application of hydraulic drive systems, as well as the possibilities for expanding their functions as control and regulation systems, have led to an extremely diverse range of types and design solutions of hydraulic components.An extremely important direction in the development of hydraulic drive technology is its transition to electrohydraulic drive technology for regulation and control. In this case, the application is significantly expanded in the field of power servo systems with electronic control.

"Hydraulic and Pneumatic Engineering" is a multidisciplinary specialty within the professional field 5.1 "Mechanical Engineering". This provides graduates with the opportunity to work in almost all sectors of economic activity in Bulgaria and abroad.

The training of students majoring in "Hydraulic and Pneumatic Engineering" is the responsibility of the Department of "Hydroaerodynamics and Hydraulic Machines", which has accumulated a history, traditions, and material base over 70 years.
Instruction in specialized subjects is conducted in spacious and comfortable classrooms equipped with all necessary technical means – computers, multimedia systems, etc.
The Department possesses one of the most extensive and rich educational and laboratory facilities in the university. In many respects, it surpasses the facilities of related specialties in the country.
Computer methods in the design and study of hydraulic and pneumatic engineering are widely used in educational and research activities.
The department's faculty members have excellent pedagogical training and extensive practical experience, enabling them to prepare future engineers for real-world practice to the greatest extent possible.

For graduates with a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree from TU-Sofia or other universities in the country and abroad in specialties from the field 5. Technical Sciences, upon completion, they will acquire Master's degree in the professional field 5.1 Mechanical Engineering.

The goal of the master's program is to provide in-depth training in fundamental disciplines, building upon the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's degree. To ensure professional preparation for master's graduates, priority is given to applied disciplines that provide knowledge, skills, and opportunities corresponding to the current level of development in hydraulic and pneumatic technology:
