The Bulgarian student team in synthetic biology won a silver medal at the finals of the iGEM world competition, with a topic focused on antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem facing medicine. Every year before the Covid-19 pandemic, around 700,000 people lose their lives due to antibiotic resistance, according to the World Health Organization. Projections indicate that this number will increase to 10 million annually by 2050. Alexander Popov is a bachelor's student in "Mechatronics" at the Technical University and is part of the team. He explained that this is the largest competition of its kind in the world, and Bulgarian participants attend it every year. "This year, over 350 teams from around the world participated." Theodora Gamizova is the captain of the Bulgarian team. She holds a master's degree in "Gene and Cell Engineering." "The idea of the project itself was to develop a method to find new antibiotic resistances in general wastewater samples, to be able to create a system for rapid detection and monitoring. These are very important statistical data for medicine for the country itself, because antibiotic resistance is a major global problem," Theodora Gamizova told Radio Sofia.
