5.2. Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Automation

The doctoral program “Automation of Areas in the Intangible Sphere” is driven by:

The growing interest of companies in the manufacturing sector, as well as in the broader economy, in scientific-applied and applied research related to this field;
The need to replenish the faculty of tenured professors by enhancing the educational and scientific qualifications of young teaching assistants and specialists;
The presence within the Faculty of Automation (FA) of highly qualified tenured faculty members with research interests in current and promising scientific and applied research areas;
The opportunity to establish ties with businesses whose core activities involve extracting information from data (including the financial, market, and pharmaceutical industries, among others), which is a prerequisite for attracting funding from industry.

The program is aimed at students who have completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees and who wish to advance their educational qualifications.
The program and the admissions process are conducted in strict compliance with the legal requirements governing doctoral education.

The program is offered by the Department of Automation of Continuous Production (ACP) and the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE). The educational requirements ensure that students acquire the following knowledge and skills:

Excellent training in the field of systems analysis and automation;
In-depth knowledge in the fields of linear algebra, mathematical analysis, and statistics;
Knowledge in the field of data mining, including system identification, machine learning, and more;
Knowledge in the field of optimization, numerical methods, and the theory of estimates;
Training in the processing and analysis of experimental data;
Practical knowledge in the field of information technology, focused on parallel processing (technologies such as OCL, CUDA, etc.) and platforms for processing large data sets (Big Data);
Knowledge of economics and econometrics, marketing, finance, planning, risk assessment, and industrial management;
Application of modern advances in information technology for the search, collection, and processing of information and data;
In-depth and creative familiarity with specialized literature and the acquisition of a high level of skills in theoretical and/or experimental research work, demonstrating creative thinking.

The goal of the program is for doctoral students to develop into:

Competent, knowledgeable, and capable researchers, ready to meet the challenges of modern industry and technology;
Highly qualified faculty members to meet the needs of the Technical University of Sofia;
Specialists who carry out applied research in constant contact and close collaboration with companies in the field.
